Overview

The Barbering Level 2 NVQ Diploma is an industry focused programme designed for individuals aspiring to become professional barbers. This comprehensive course provides the essential knowledge, skills, and practical training required to excel in the exciting world of barbering. It is suitable for those wishing to start a career in the barbering industry or for those within the industry who wish to add barbering to their skillset.

Throughout the course, students will gain a solid foundation in barbering techniques and practices. They will learn how to create a range of traditional and contemporary men's hairstyles, including clipper work, scissor over comb, fading, blending, and texturising. Students will also develop expertise in facial hair grooming, including beard shaping, trimming, and detailing.

The College will review the qualifications and/or experience held by applicants and will consider whether this profile shows an ability to progress towards a level 2 qualification. The College may also use other evidence provided as part of the application process.
All applicants must be able to demonstrate at interview that they have a satisfactory level of fluency in English – both written and spoken. The College reserves the right to refer any applicant to appropriate English Language or Literacy classes until their level of fluency in written and spoken English is sufficient to allow participation in other areas of study.
Applicants must be at least 16 years of age on or before 1st July in the year of proposed entry to the course.
Applicants should normally have a minimum of a full Level 1 qualification (4 GCSEs at grades D-G, including English and Mathematics at grades D-F or equivalent qualification profile from the Register of Regulated Qualifications). Applicants presenting with a Junior Cert qualification should have attained a majority of higher-level subjects. Applicants presenting with a Junior Cycle must have achieved 4 merits or above to facilitate entry to level 2 courses.
During the Pre-Entry Advice Sessions which may take place either on campus, via telephone or video call (Microsoft teams), applicants will be expected to demonstrate that they are committed and motivated to the programme.
Students are required to purchase their own barbering kit and training heads for training.
Professional uniform consisting of black trousers, tunic and shoes is compulsory and must be worn in all practical sessions.

Modules include:

Advise and consult with clients
Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
Develop and maintain effectiveness at work
Cut men’s hair using basic techniques
Cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques
Dry and finish men’s hair
Create basic out-lines and detailing in hair
Assist with shaving services
Fulfil salon reception duties

Assessments within the course are designed to evaluate students' competence in various barbering skills.. Assessment is in the form of practical tasks and knowledge and understanding task(s) in an assignment or an online test.

Students are required to purchase their own barbering kit and training heads. They will also be expected to wear a professional uniform consisting of black trousers, tunic and shoes.

On successful completion of this course students may progress to the Level 3 Diploma in Barbering offered at SRC.

Upon successful completion of the Barbering Level 2 NVQ Diploma, students will be equipped with the necessary skills to pursue a career as a professional barber. They will be qualified to work in a variety of settings, including barber shops, hair salons, grooming studios, and even establish their own barbering business.
