OVERVIEW

This unit introduces learners to the core concepts of programming with an introduction to algorithms and the characteristics of programming using Python. This course is designed to provide you with the skills and knowledge in programming using Python.  

This course will be delivered with a blended approach, meaning it will require learners to attend campus at certain times.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

A minimum of 4 GCSEs at Grade C or above to include GCSE English Language Grade C or above OR Pass in Level 2 Essential Skills Literacy and GCSE Mathematics Grade C or above OR Pass in Level 2 Essential Skills Numeracy.

Eligibility for all courses:  
1. Must be 18 on or before course start date;  
2. Eligible to work in Northern Ireland; 
3. ‘Settled’ in Northern Ireland, and has been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least three years; 
4. Or is a person who has indefinite leave to enter or remain in the UK; 
5. Candidates are only permitted to complete a maximum of 2 free courses at a time. 

MODULES

  • Define basic algorithms to carry out an operation and outline the process of
    programming an application.
  • Explain the characteristics of procedural, object-orientated and event-driven
    programming.
  • Implement basic algorithms in code using an IDE.
  • Determine the debugging process and explain the importance of a coding
    standard.

This course is FREE to individuals through the Skill UP Flexible Skills Programme. The Flexible Skills Fund has been established to help upskill and reskill individuals to meet the needs of the economy as we emerge from the pandemic and continue to grow the Economy beyond it.

PROGRESSION

Direct follow on opportunities include further study on the Level 4 HNC Computing programme. Single Unit accreditation also allows for practitioners within the IT and Computing industry to upskill in specific areas such as Programming and Infrastructure.
