Clones based tank manufacturing company, Alpha Tanks has partnered with Southern Regional College on a 12-month technology development project, which began in September 2013.
As part of the company's development plans to increase their technical capability in order to compete for higher value contracts and to enhance their offering to clients, the project will support the introduction of a 3D design service for pressure vessel manufacture.
The strategic aim of Alpha Tanks Ltd is to expand the pressure vessel manufacturing part of their business. This currently forms approximately 15% of their annual turnover. Up to now, the Company has not actively marketed their ability to design and manufacture CE marked pressure vessels, designed and built to comply with stringent international standards. Whilst the company has developed its pressure vessel manufacturing capabilities, a deficit currently exists in its technical and engineering skills.
Up until now the Company has used an informal approach with regards to pressure vessel design. Formalizing this approach will give Alpha Tanks the confidence to market their pressure vessel manufacturing business more aggressively. Consequently it will give existing and potential new customers confidence that Alpha Tanks can supply their pressure vessel requirements.
Through Fusion, the Company plans to access the expertise and facilities in the School of Engineering at Southern Regional College. This will be mainly in the area of computerised design for manufacture to produce design calculations for pressure vessels and to carry out Finite Element Analysis. This will allow Alpha Tanks to identify potential new customers and new pressure equipment products, provide sales quotations/proposals in a timely manner and to achieve its aim of increasing its market share in supplying bespoke pressure vessel design solutions.
The academic providing support to the graduate is i3 Research Lecturer for Engineering, Sean McGurn. Sean has a BEng (Hons) Degree in Mechanical Engineering as well as a Ph. D in Heat Transfer Modeling. He has seven years industrial experience in heavy industry, namely cement and fertilizer production, plus eight years in high volume lean manufacturing of solar tubes. He also has Knowledge of 2D and 3D drawing packages, specifically AutoCAD and Solidworks for engineering applications.
Sean also has research experience in modeling algorithms and FEA type analysis. His teaching portfolio includes pneumatics, hydraulics and PLC's as well as training staff on machines and processes in a factory environment.
Sean looks forward to working with Alpha Tanks in helping them achieve their goal of increasing their technical capabilities. It is anticipated that project outcomes will be realized by September 2014.
