Southern Regional College students recently travelled to Helsinki, Finland, as part of the Erasmus+ programme in partnership with the Diakonia College Helsinki.
The 10 students from the School of Early Years and Healthcare, spent two weeks working with local preschool groups. Gaining the opportunity to develop their vocational skills in early years and health care. In addition to this students learnt and embraced the culture with visits to the Temppeliaukio Church ‘the Rock Church, and the beautiful green domed Helsinki Cathedral. They tasted different foods, experienced the festivities celebrating the Chinese New Year as well as enjoying the activities provided by the freezing temperatures participating in sledging, ice skating and ice walking on Töölönlahti.
Students also developed their life skills, widened their communication skills and became more independent. These skills will make them more employable and provide a platform of which they can progress to higher education and employment for their future careers. A number of students made such an impression during their placement that they were offered the opportunity of employment in the summer months.
The trip follows a recent visit to SRC by Finish student Piia Leppakoski who recently completed a seven week internship at the college. Pia and International Relations Coordinator Heli Ramula, welcomed the SRC visitors, facilitating a number of visits to Diakonia College, and showcasing the Finish approach to education and health and social care.
