Students Cook Up a Storm at 2019 Futurechef Competition

Southern Regional College recently hosted the local heats of Springboard’s Futurechef Competition at its Newry and Armagh Campuses where local school students were invited to ‘cook up a storm’ in the classroom.

Futurechef is a nationwide cooking competition which is open to 12-16 year old students throughout Great Britain and inspires them to cook through classroom activities, industry skills demonstrations and challenges and competitions.

Paul Takes to the Waves with SRC

Paul Kelly, from Newry, recently completed and achieved the Standards of Training, Certification and Watch Keeping (STCW) 95 licence in conjunction with Southern Regional College. He took part in the Work at Sea project which was funded by the Department of Communities as part of its neighbourhood renewal strategy and was delivered at the National Maritime College in Ireland.

SRC Triumphs in WorldSkillsUK Live Medals Table

Southern Regional College is celebrating this week after retaining its top three leader board ranking at this year’s WorldSkills UK Live event held in Birmingham. With more than 500 apprentices and students competing in over 70 disciplines, SRC’s seven-medal haul from the event also saw it retain its number one place in Northern Ireland on the strength of its stellar performance.

Putting SRC out in front was Portadown’s Shelby Jones and Dylan Calvert from Tandragee who faced down the competition in Beauty Therapy and Floor & Wall Tiling respectively to take home gold medals.

Facing tough competition, SRC’s team of students from across the Newry & Mourne, Armagh and Craigavon areas secured two gold medals, three silver and two bronze medals across a wide variety of disciplines, including beauty therapy (all three pupils studied Beauty Therapy in Armagh Campus), professional cookery and tiling (all three winning pupils study in Newry Greenbank Campus).

SRC has the Largest NI Team Competing at WorldSkills UK Finals!

Southern Regional College (SRC) has the largest number of students from N.Ireland competing at the National Finals of the WorldSkills UK LIVE Competitions at the NEC in Birmingham.

Having fought off tough competition to secure a place in the prestigious national finals, 20 skilled young students and apprentices from SRC will compete in front of over 70,000 visitors at WorldSkills UK LIVE.
