FAQs: Lecturing Staff and Action Short of Strike – April 2025

1. What does "action short of strike" mean for SRC?

"Action short of strike", sometimes referred to as “ASOS”, means that lecturers at SRC are taking industrial action, but not strike action. Unlike strike action which involves lecturers stopping work, ASOS involves temporarily agreeing to actions that limit certain activities or extra duties and/or working to rule. Working to rule is a form of industrial action where employees strictly adhere to the minimum requirements of their contracts.

2. Will my classes still go ahead as scheduled?

Yes, your classes should continue as planned. Teaching and learning is unaffected.

3. Will I miss out on important lessons or coursework during this time?

No, staff are still committed to delivering your programme of study and to ensuring that you do not miss out on classes or coursework during this time. There may be temporary delays in providing extra-curricular academic activities if that falls under extra duties.

4. What if I fall behind? Can I still ask for support from academic staff?

Yes. If you feel that you’re falling behind, reach out to your personal tutor and they will support you as much as possible. This falls under teaching and learning so there should be no delay.

5. Will my exams or assessments be affected?

No. Exams and assessments are not expected to be impacted. Awarding organisations determine the timetable, so there will be no change. SRC will notify students well in advance so you can prepare accordingly.

6. How will this affect other College services, like libraries or student support?

Other student and wider services such as the library and student support services will be running as normal.

7. What should I do if I have an issue or question about my course?

If you have any course-related concerns, please contact your course coordinator or Head of Faculty. They will work with you to resolve any issues and ensure you have access to the materials and support you need. Faculty contact details are available on the website by clicking here.

8. Will the action short of strike affect my EMA (Education Maintenance Allowance) payments?

To ensure you continue receiving your EMA payments, you must sign in manually at the Campus Services Reception each day you are timetabled to be on campus. This temporary process ensures your attendance is recorded accurately. If you fail to sign in, your EMA payment may be affected, so please make it a priority each day.

9. Should I be worried about missing out on my qualification or coursework?

No need to worry. The College is working to ensure that any disruption is minimised and that you are not affected. Any changes will be communicated promptly, and we will ensure you have the resources and support you need.

10. How will SRC keep students informed?

SRC will regularly update students via their student email, the SRC website and social media. We encourage you to check these sources for the latest information to avoid confusion.

11. Will I receive compensation if my studies are disrupted?

ASOS may slow down some aspects of administration around your studies, but the delivery of learning, teaching and assessment should not be affected.
