Overview

This course falls under the South East Cross Border alliance (SECBA). A project supported by PEACEPLUS, a programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).

This OCN NI Level 4 Certificate in Applied Mathematics for Laboratory Science will enable learners to develop the skills and knowledge for the application of mathematical methods to scientific data. It is designed to equip students with the essential mathematical skills and knowledge required for success in laboratory science disciplines. This certificate course focuses on the practical application of mathematics in laboratory settings, providing students with a strong foundation to analyse data, solve problems, and make informed decisions.

Practical exercises and real-world case studies will be incorporated to provide hands-on experience, allowing students to apply mathematical principles taught. This will enhance their ability to interpret data, construct mathematical models, and draw meaningful conclusions.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will have a solid understanding of how mathematics is utilized in laboratory science applications. Applicants must have:

At least one year’s experience in a science related occupation (please upload an email from your line manager confirming that you meet this criteria); AND
At least 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) including English and Mathematics at Grade C or above (please upload official certificates to the SRC application portal)

Candidates who do not hold the above qualifications can alternatively have achieved:

A level 3 qualification or a level 2 qualification (please upload official certificates to the SRC application portal)

The objectives of the OCN NI Level 4 Certificate in Applied Mathematics for Laboratory Science are to enable learners to:

Interpret, evaluate and communicate scientific data
Work with standard mathematical form, logarithms, algebraic functions and their graphical representation
Apply statistical methods to scientific data
Apply differential and integral calculus to scientific problems

This course is assessed internally through assignment based work.

Upon completing this Level 4 Certificate in Applied Mathematics for Laboratory Science, students can progress to a variety of higher level courses that further enhance their knowledge and skills in laboratory science and mathematics. This may include Level 5 courses in Laboratory Science, Applied Statistics, Applied Science, Applied Mathematics or Biotechnology.
