Overview

The Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Film and Television (HND) is an advanced programme designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience necessary for a successful career in the film and media industry. This comprehensive course offers a combination of theoretical study, practical training, and industry-focused projects, preparing students for a wide range of roles in film production, post-production, and related fields. It offers a range of core, optional and specialist units, each with fully revised and updated content that is closely aligned to the needs of employers and higher education.

Throughout the course, students will develop their understanding of film theory and practice, exploring different genres, styles, and storytelling techniques. They will learn to critically analyse films, understand the role of cinema in society, and apply theoretical knowledge to their own creative projects. Practical training will be provided in specialised areas such as camera operation, lighting, sound recording, editing software, and visual effects tools.

The HND in Film and Television is designed to enhance students' technical skills and creative abilities through hands-on projects and industry placements. Students will have the opportunity to work individually and collaboratively on film productions, producing high-quality short films, documentaries, or other audiovisual content. They will learn to navigate the entire production process, from pre-production planning and script development to post-production editing and distribution.

The over-riding consideration in admitting applicants to this course, is evidence that the learner is likely to be able to complete the course satisfactorily.

Attendance at Individual or Group Pre-Entry Advice Sessions (IPEAS and GPEAS) may be required. These interviews may take place either on campus, via telephone or video call (Microsoft teams) and will play an important role in place allocation.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age on or before 1st July 2024.

Applicants should have attained a minimum of 48 UCAS points achieved through the completion of A Levels, National Awards, Access or other alternative approved level 3 qualifications.
Applicants should have attained at least 15 points at Level 2 or above (e.g. GCSE) or have alternative approved qualifications. In addition, applicants must provide evidence of competence in written and spoken English Language. For entry to this programme, applicants should have attained a C grade in GCSE English language and a C grade in GCSE Maths (or equivalent) .
Applicants who do not meet the criteria outlined above but have evidence of substantial knowledge or relevant industrial experience and skills, which has not been formally assessed, should refer to the College’s Accreditation of Prior Experience and Learning (APEL) Policy.

Please note that applicants progressing to higher education courses at Level 4 and above in the College or UK Universities may require a specific GCSE/ A-Level profile. In some cases, the Essential Skills in Literacy and Numeracy may not be a suitable alternative to a GCSE. It is the responsibility of the applicant to check each University’s progression requirements before enrolling on a course at the College.

Module A: Process & Practice – Year 1 (Level 4)

This module aims to build the foundational knowledge and skills necessary for students to begin their journey in the film and television industry. By integrating research, development, and production skills, students will explore the knowledge, understanding and technical skills required to progress within the sector.

Module B: Professional Creative Practice – Year 2 (Level 5)

B2: Professional Project

Within this module, learners will enhance their creative, technical, and contextual knowledge and skills, channelling them towards more complex and professionally-oriented outcomes. Students will explore both the creative and technical aspects of their own practice and their future career intentions; developing projects and professional skills and materials that will enable them to progress to employment or continued study.

Assessment in the Higher National Diploma in Film and Television is varied and may include assignments, discussion forums, case studies, peer review and projects, which may include production of an artefact/portfolio. Students will be assessed on their ability to apply theoretical concepts to practical scenarios, demonstrate technical proficiency in film production techniques, and showcase their creative vision and storytelling skills.

Also, students have the opportunity to attend various trips and events as opportunities arise throughout the duration of the course. While these are not mandatory for success, they complement course content and should cost no more than £20–£30 per year.

Students may choose to continue their studies at the College and progress onto the BA (Hons) in Creative Imaging at Banbridge Campus, or they may wish to pursue other media related courses at alternative higher education institutions.

Upon successful completion of the Level 5 HND in Film and Television, students will possess a comprehensive skill set and a deep understanding of film production. Graduates will be equipped to pursue a range of career opportunities in the film and media industry, such as film director, cinematographer, editor, screenwriter, producer, or visual effects artist. They may find employment in film production companies, television networks, advertising agencies, or freelance work.
