Overview

This course falls under the South East Cross Border Alliance (SECBA) which is a fully funded project supported by PEACEPLUS, a programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).

The OCN NI Level 3 Laboratory Skills qualification will enable the learner to gain the skills and knowledge required to use laboratory equipment in order to competently perform testing and analysis activities in a laboratory environment.

Following successful completion of this qualification the learner will be able to apply learned skills and knowledge applicable to different science-based laboratory occupations.

This course is targeted at learners who wish to develop their laboratory science skills in order to progress into laboratory-based occupations. This qualification will also support laboratory workers who wish to enhance their current laboratory and science skills.

Learners must be at least 16 years of age at the date of entry to the programme.
Learners should have achieved at least a Grade C in GCSE English and Mathematics or an appropriate alternative qualification.
Learners should also have achieved a level 2 qualification in a science related discipline and/or two years relevant industry laboratory experience

Laboratory Working Practices
Scientific Mathematics
Microscopy Techniques
Laboratory Analytical Techniques
Practical Organic Synthesis and Laboratory Separation Techniques
Processing Scientific Data by Statistical Analysis
Scientific Project Planning and Delivery
Biomedical Analysis

Grading for this qualification is pass/fail.

Learners may be assessed through a variety of assessment methods including oral questions and answers, written reports, projects or specific tasks or simulations.

Learners will compile evidence throughout the course (e.g., assignments, practical records, reports, observations) which is kept in a portfolio.

On successful completion of this qualification, learners may progress to to higher level science qualifications (Level 4 and above).

With this qualification successful students could pursue roles such as:

Laboratory assistant or laboratory technician
Analytical laboratory support
Quality control/quality assurance assistant in manufacturing/industrial labs
Technical support in bio-medical, chemical, environmental, food-testing laboratories
