Overview

The Leadership for Health and Social Care Services (Adult Management or Adult Residential Management) Level 5 Diploma is a comprehensive programme designed to develop the knowledge, skills, and competencies required for effective leadership and management within the adult health and social care sector. This course fulfils the Northern Ireland Social Care Council (NISCC) requirements for managers and deputy managers in health & social care settings.

This diploma course is specifically tailored for individuals aspiring to or already working in managerial positions within the health and social care industry. Students may also be supported to develop professionally with the support of their organisation, provided the requirements of the course can be met.

Throughout the course, students will explore the key principles and theories of leadership and management. They will critically analyse the challenges and opportunities within the adult health and social care sector, including policy frameworks, service delivery models, and funding mechanisms. Students will develop a deep understanding of the legal and ethical considerations that underpin leadership and management, as well as the importance of promoting person-centred care and ensuring quality and safety in service provision.

The diploma combines theoretical knowledge with practical application. Students will have opportunities to apply their learning through case studies, real-world scenarios, and workplace-based projects. They will develop skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making, addressing complex issues and applying strategic approaches to leadership and management challenges. Additionally, students will enhance their communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills to effectively engage with stakeholders, staff, service users, and external partners.

Students will be required to compile an electronic portfolio of evidence. The qualification guides and assesses development of knowledge, understanding and skills in management practice within health and social care.

The over-riding consideration in admitting applicants to this course, is evidence that the learner is likely to be able to complete the course satisfactorily.

Attendance at Individual or Group Pre-Entry Advice Sessions (IPEAS and GPEAS) may be required. These interviews may take place either on campus, via telephone or video call (Microsoft teams) and will play an important role in place allocation.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age on or before 1st July 2024.
Applicants must be currently employed as a manager or assistant manager in a health & social care setting or have management responsibilities within their role or be supported to gain experience for professional development by their organisation (in line with the course requirements).
An interview will play an integral role in securing an offer of a place on this course.

Please note that applicants progressing to higher education courses at Level 4 and above in the College or UK Universities may require a specific GCSE/ A-Level profile. In some cases, the Essential Skills in Literacy and Numeracy may not be a suitable alternative to a GCSE. It is the responsibility of the applicant to check each University’s progression requirements before enrolling on a course at the College.

Assessment will be conducted through written assignments, professional discussion, critical reflection and direct observation in the workplace.

Graduates may choose to progress to higher level qualifications or professional certifications to further enhance their career prospects such as the Level 7 Award in Strategic Management and Leadership offered at SRC.

Previous students have received module exemption on courses at university, such as Social Work.

Upon successful completion of the Leadership for Health and Social Care Services (Adult Management or Adult Residential Management) Level 5 Diploma, graduates will be well-equipped to pursue leadership and management roles within the adult health and social care sector. They may seek employment as managers, team leaders, or service coordinators in residential care facilities, community organisations, hospitals, or social service agencies.
