Overview

This unit explores the way in which, social, emotional and mental health difficulties are linked with speech, language and communication and provides effective ways to support the speech, language
and communication development of children and young people with social, emotional and mental health difficulties.

This unit is part of a qualification designed for those who work with children and young people. It provides a professional development opportunity and aims to develop the appropriate knowledge and skills to enable learners to:

Understand the importance of speech, language and communication.
Identify the signs in those children who are experiencing difficulties.
Promote speech, language and communication development.
Explore ways to support children and young people who have speech, language and communication needs (SLCN).

This Course is funded through the Skill Up programme. All applicants must meet the following entry requirements:

Applicants must be 18 years of age on or before the course start date.
Applicants must have a right to work and undertake training in the UK at the point of application and for the duration of the course. Proof of this will be required to progress application. Prove your right to work to an employer: Overview - GOV.UK
If required, applicants must be available to register in person at an SRC Campus.
Applicants must meet the academic eligibility criteria for each course applied to.

Documentation confirming eligibility of the above criteria will be requested prior to securing a place on the course.

Candidates are permitted to complete a maximum of two free courses at a time with any Skill Up provider and must be available to attend class during published class times.

Places on Skill Up courses are limited and course dates are subject to change. Minimum numbers will be required for a course to run.

Areas of study include:

Understand the links between language, behaviour, social and emotional development and mental health.
Understand how to support positive speech, language and communication development for children and young people with social, emotional and mental health needs.
Understand how to adapt strategies and approaches to support social, emotional and mental health to meet speech, language and communication needs.
Know how to work with others to support the speech, language and communication development of children and young people with social, emotional and mental health needs.

Grading of this unit is Achieved/Not Yet Achieved. This unit will be internally assessed and externally quality assured through a portfolio of evidence.

Students completing this unit may wish to progress to a higher level of study such as the Level 3 Certificate or Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning or other short courses within the suite of Childcare and Special Needs courses.

This award provides opportunities for specialist learning for practitioners working in a wide range of occupational settings including children and young peoples work, early years settings, health and social care, playwork, youth work and educational establishments.

Continuing professional development (CPD) in speech language and communication can lead to an increase in confidence. It can also improve practice and achieve better outcomes for children and young people.
