Southern Regional College Media Level 3 Extended Diploma students Jake Steenson (19) and Lexi McKee (18) have successfully completed the 2025/26 British Film Institute (BFI) Film Academy Short Course, delivered by AmmA Creative Learning Centre.

Running from September to December 2025, the programme concluded with an awards night in mid-January where participants’ short films were screened. Throughout the course, Jake and Lexi worked as part of a production team on short films, alongside weekly evening workshops and masterclasses led by film industry professionals.

The experience provided students with a realistic insight into careers in filmmaking, combining hands-on production work with guidance from established industry figures. Guest speakers included Sarah Gordon, a screenwriter whose credits include the television series Game of Thrones.

Jake, who took on the role of a lighting technician and editor for the short film ‘Doctors Orders’ explains the impact of the BFI course on his future:

“On set, I was responsible for the lighting, including setting up and positioning equipment and tripods. I also worked as one of the editors and helped create an early edit of Doctor’s Orders.”

“The course has influenced my future career plans significantly. I never expected to enjoy lighting as much as I did, but I did and it’s now something I would seriously consider as a career.”

Lexi who took on the role of operating the camera during filming and also stepped in front of the camera for a small acting role, has said the course had a lasting impact on her confidence and ambitions:

“The experience really helped build my confidence and encouraged me to put myself forward for roles. It’s made me seriously consider studying film at university and has given me a clearer understanding of what I would like to do within the film industry.”

Ryan O’Hagan, Media lecturer at Southern Regional College commented:

“Jake and Lexi have shown real professionalism, creativity and commitment throughout this programme. Opportunities like the BFI Film Academy allow our students to experience the pace, standards and collaboration expected within the film industry. Seeing them step outside their comfort zones, develop technical skills and grow in confidence has been incredible. Experiences like this don’t just enhance a CV, they shape career direction and ambition. We are extremely proud of what they have achieved within this Academy.”
