Southern Regional College (SRC) student Emilis Meinertas and lecturer Mairead Fitzpatrick have been shortlisted for OCN NI’s Learning Endeavour Awards 2026. Emilis is shortlisted within the category ‘Further Education Learner of the Year’ with catering lecturer Mairead recognised in the ‘Inspiring Tutor of the Year’ category. Both are among just six candidates within their respective categories. The winners of the Awards will be announced on Tuesday 23rd June at the Titanic Belfast.

Emilis is currently undertaking the Hospitality and Catering Level 2 Certificate alongside a Social Media Level 1 Award. Described by his tutors as an ‘exceptional student’, he consistently goes the extra mile. Despite language barriers, adapting to a new culture and education system and challenging travel logistics, Emilis has remained focused on achieving his goals. Travelling across the border to SRC Newry campus, Emilis has achieved 100% attendance, despite a daily journey involving two buses.

Lecturer Mairead has dedicated 36 years to teaching at SRC and is highly regarded for her outstanding work with special educational needs (SEN) students across the College’s Newry and Portadown campuses. She has played a significant role in developing students' independence, confidence and employability skills. In 2021, Mairead was instrumental in the development of a one-year Catering Level 1 programme for SEN students in conjunction with Clanrye Group . She continues to lead the programme, which has achieved strong progression rates, with many students advancing to the Level 2 programme.

Michelle Moore, Curriculum Area Manager of Hospitality and Tourism at Southern Regional College commented:
