Overview

GCSE English Language encourages students to explore and respond, both imaginatively and critically, to a variety of texts. Students will use reading to improve their writing and spoken language skills. They will also enhance their understanding of how language variations relate to identity and cultural diversity. This GCSE develops key transferable skills, such as selecting and adapting speech and writing to suit different situations and audiences.

Students undertaking this will be enrolled to complete the full GCSE English Language qualification. It cannot be taken as individual units.

: Students should be fluent in the English language and have an interest in this subject area.
: Students will study areas such as writing for an audience, speaking and listening, studying spoken and written language and personal or creative writing.
: Students will sit two controlled assessments (response to the written word and response to the spoken word). They will also have three speaking and listening controlled assessments and two external written examination papers.
: GCSE English can lead to further study such as A-Levels, Extended Diplomas or Access courses for mature students.
