Overview

This level 2 award will allow learners to develop the core knowledge and understanding required for working in the area of early years. It introduces the principles of child development, safeguarding, and the role of the early years practitioner. Learners will explore how to support children’s wellbeing, learning, and play, as well as develop an awareness of the professional skills and responsibilities required in early years care and education.

This is an introductory level programme which is a stepping stone to certificate and extended certificate programmes within early years. Learners do not need to be working or undertaking a placement in early years setting.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Learners should be at least 16 years of age and have an interest in working with children.

This course is funded through the Skill Up programme. All applicants must meet the following entry requirements:

Applicants must be 18 years of age on or before the course start date.
Applicants must have a right to work and undertake training in the UK at the point of application and for the duration of the course. Proof of this will be required to progress application. Prove your right to work to an employer: Overview - GOV.UK
If required, applicants must be available to register in person at a SRC Campus.
Applicants must meet the academic eligibility criteria for each course applied to.

Documentation confirming eligibility of the above criteria will be requested prior to securing a place on the course.

Candidates are permitted to complete a maximum of two free courses at a time with any Skill Up provider and must be available to attend class during published class times.

Places on Skill Up courses are limited and course dates are subject to change. Minimum numbers will be required for a course to run.

To achieve this award, learners are required to complete two mandatory units and one optional unit to include:

Health and Safety in an Early Years Setting
Safeguarding Children
The Importance of Play in a Child's Development

Assessment of this programme is entirely through coursework, consisting of a written assessment submitted via a work booklet.

On completion of the course, learners may wish to progress to the Level 2 Certificate or Extended Certificate in Early Years. Learners may wish to undertake other professional development at level 2 or level 3 in a related area.

Through this award and further study, learners may seek out roles as Early Years Assistants, Childcare Support Workers, Creche Assistants or Playworkers in a range of settings.
