Overview

This progamme is suitable for individuals already working in roles that offer specialist support for pupils’ learning in primary, secondary or special schools, as well as colleges. It provides learners with an in-depth understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school and college environments.

It covers all aspects of specialist support, including:

Planning, delivering and reviewing assessment strategies to support learning alongside the teacher.
Bilingual support.
Special needs support.
Personal development and reflective practice.

Applicants must:

Be employed as a Classroom Assistant
Be able to complete 200 hrs of work based learning before course finish
Be aged 18 or above

There is no specific prior knowledge a learner must have for this qualification, however, learners may find it helpful if they’ve already achieved a level 2 qualification.

Vetting Process

This course involves working with children, young people and vulnerable adults. To assess suitability to work with children, young people and vulnerable adults it is our policy to ask for a criminal record check to be carried out by AccessNI. Therefore, Southern Regional College requires checks to be completed at an ‘Enhanced’ level. This programme is internally assessed and externally quality assured through a portfolio of evidence for knowledge components.

A skills competency assessment will be conducted via onsite observations of the learner's practice.

SRC offer an array of short courses to enhance professional development in this area. Many students also choose to progress to the Level 5 Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies, studying part-time.
