Students from across the region are benefiting from PEACEPLUS funding to complete the Level 5 Foundation Degree in Applied Science at Southern Regional College through South East Cross Border alliance (SECBA). A project supported by PEACEPLUS, a programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB). The Foundation Degree provides them with valuable qualifications and practical skills while helping to tackle significant skills shortages across the science and manufacturing sectors.
The programme combines academic study with hands-on laboratory experience, giving students the opportunity to develop technical, analytical and problem-solving skills highly sought after by employers. Through the support of cross-border PEACEPLUS funding, learners who may otherwise face financial barriers are being given access to higher education and clear progression pathways into employment or further study.
Graduates of the course will be well placed to pursue careers in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, environmental science, food production, healthcare science and advanced manufacturing — industries which continue to experience strong demand for qualified professionals both locally and across the North and South of Ireland. Employers are increasingly seeking candidates with specialist scientific knowledge and practical experience, making programmes such as this vital for future workforce development.
Dr. Karen Mooney, Course Director for the SECBA funded Applied Science Foundation Degree said this unique initiative not only supports students in achieving their career ambitions but also contributes to economic growth by developing a pipeline of highly skilled workers who can meet the evolving needs of industry across the region.
