The Newry, Mourne and Down Chairperson’s Civic Awards were held on Friday 20th February 2026 at the Millbrook Lodge Hotel, Ballynahinch. It was a proud occasion for Southern Regional College, with both staff and a student being recognised for their outstanding contributions and achievements.
Electrical Installation apprentice student Rachel Carvill won the Youth Impact Award. The award recognises young people under the age of 18 who have made a positive impact through their achievements, leadership, creativity or community contribution.
At 17, Rachel has secured two gold medals at the World TaeKwonDo Championships, alongside Ulster and All-Ireland boxing titles. She is also among a growing number of young women pursuing a trade apprenticeship at the College. Her employer, Murray & McEvoy, praised her strong work ethic, willingness to learn and support for colleagues. Rachel has developed particular expertise in solar panel installation and has demonstrated the ability to take responsibility for tasks within this specialist area.
Also recognised for their commitment to the Newry Mourne Down Region was lecturer Dr Liz Finnegan and the wider ICAS team within the Arts, Culture & Heritage Award. ICAS, the Interdisciplinary Conference in Arts and Science, takes place each January at the College’s Newry campus. The conference sparks conversations in art, literature and heritage attracting artists, writers and researchers from across the globe.
Lastly, commended for fundraising efforts were Sarah Ryan from the College’s Organisational Development Team and Jason Brennan, representing the College’s Student Engagement Team. Both lead on the College’s social responsibility efforts, which include fundraising for charity as well as organising foodbanks and toy appeals.
Mrs Lee Campbell, Principal & Chief Executive of Southern Regional College commented:
“My sincere congratulations go to Rachel, Dr Finnegan and the ICAS team, Sarah, Jason and everyone recognised at the Chairperson’s Civic Awards. Their achievements reflect the very best of Southern Regional College.
